Are Hot Showers Safe in Pregnancy?

Pregnancy can be a very exciting time. Not only are you going to welcome a new life into the world after only nine short months, but everything about your life is going to change. From your body to your schedule, a baby has the ability to impact every part of your life. If you are pregnant for the first time it can be a very confusing time. Pregnancy brings about a lot of change that you most likely don’t fully understand. Your main priority during your pregnancy is to keep yourself and your baby safe and growing. There are a lot of myths surrounding pregnancy habits and it is time that you learned which ones are true. One of the most common questions that women ask during pregnancy centers on showering. Hot showers are something that most women enjoy, but many pregnant women assume that they are not safe while they are carrying a baby. It is time that you learned once and for all if taking a hot shower while pregnant is safe or not.

Here is everything that you need to know about hot showers and pregnancy:

Body Temperature

One of the main reasons why hot showers are said to be unsafe during pregnancy is due to body temperature. If you take a hot shower no later how long it may be, you are essentially increasing your core temperature. This is true if you are in a sauna or a hot tub as well. Increasing your core temperature while pregnant is not ideal and is not always safe, which is why women that are pregnant are not advised to take hot showers. You want the water that you are exposed to while showering to be warm, but to not be so hot that it increases your core body temperature at a high rate.

Dehydration

It has also been found that pregnant women that take hot showers can also be at an increased risk of dehydration. This is not a good thing when you are pregnant and expecting. It has been proven that dehydration while the mother is pregnant can lead to birth defects in babies. This means that there can be real and severe problems that arise due to hot showering while pregnant. Dehydration to any degree while pregnant is dangerous and hot showers are linked to dehydration in a big way. This means that hot showers are something that expectant mothers need to avoid.

Blood Pressure

It has also been shown that a hot shower has the ability to lower blood pressure in a big way and can increase the chance of fainting. This is another important reason why expectant mothers should always avoid hot showers.

Just because you are pregnant does not mean that all showers are dangerous, but it does mean that you need to be aware of the temperature of the water while you are showing. Only using warm water that will not increase the core body temperature is what is recommended most for a safe pregnancy.
