Thieves Tea – An Essential Oil Recipe

I love this time of year. I love fall! The leaves are changing, pretty holiday decorations are getting pulled out, there’s a bite in the air, and lovely smells in the air! It brings back so many wonderful memories of holidays past. What I dressed up as for Halloween as a kid. My big, loud Italian family around the table for Thanksgiving. Running around the house with my sister to put baby Jesus into the mangers of all my mother’s many nativity scenes on Christmas morning, then settling down on the living room floor with my family to open gifts, Christmas music playing.

This is by far my favorite time of year!

Though fond memories are not the only thing that this time of year brings. Yep, you guessed it, viruses. Between kids going back to school and the change in temperature, sometimes it cannot be avoided. For years, my kids and I would be sick constantly during this time of year. A monthly cold that would last one and a half to two weeks, sometimes longer for me if it reached my sinuses (which it often did). It was so miserable!

I began transitioning our family to a healthier lifestyle about a year ago; cleaned up our diets (though I will not lie, I still have a major sweet tooth and the occasional junk food craving), and switched our medicine cabinet over to include a gamut of essential oils.

Seriously, I cannot say enough about essential oils. They have been so amazing for my family, I cannot believe I lived without them for so long!

Since making this switch, my kids and I are not sick nearly as often as we used to be. Such a blessing! And when I do feel a cold coming on, I always turn to Thieves tea.

We discussed Young Living’s Thieves essential oil blend a few posts back when I shared my recipe for a homemade, non-toxic hand sanitizer. Thieves is a blend of clove, cinnamon, lemon, rosemary, and eucalyptus essential oils. It has been university tested for it’s cleansing abilities. This is one oil that I do NOT like to run out of!!

The beginning of a cold for me is almost always a sore throat. And it always seems to be the morning. I go to bed thinking I’m good, feeling great, I’ve managed to avoid catching the bug. Then I wake up and BAM, sore throat. Ugh. And it used to always be such a depressing time, because I knew what I was about to endure for weeks.

Now, I literally stop a common cold in it’s tracks with about five tiny drops of oil. Just five drops!

First, I dilute a couple drops of Thieves and rub it on the outside of my throat. This dulls the pain so I can get on with making my delicious Thieves tea.

For the tea, I mix one drop of Thieves and two drops of Lemon into a teaspoon of honey, using a toothpick to stir. Next, I stir the honey mixture into a steaming mug of hot water. FYI, always use glass when mixing essential oils into beverages. Then, I sip my sore throat away. It’s that easy!

Now, if I am in a hurry and don’t have time for a quick shower, let alone to sip a mug of anything, then I will just place a drop of Thieves under my tongue. Numbs the sore throat, and quickly gets the oils to work in supporting the immune system.

Do you want to know the other awesome part about this?

Those five little drops of oil cost me fifty cents. Can you believe that?! I avoid a lengthy, annoying cold, and avoid spending money on medicines in an attempt to cover up the symptoms while riding out the wonderful virus. Just fifty cents, and I can go about my life and skip the runny, stuffy nose, headache, congestion, lack of sleep, etc. It is so totally worth it.
